It's the middle of August. In six weeks the water starts cooling off and fall fishing kicks in — which means shorter days, colder water, bigger fish, and gear that has to hold up. Before your setup gets tested by all of that, take one honest look at your kayak. Here's the five-point check I run every year, and what to do if something on your rig doesn't pass.

The 5-Point Pre-Fall Kayak Audit
Fall bass fishing is my favorite season of the year. It's also the one that punishes a lazy setup. Take fifteen minutes this weekend and run these five checks on your kayak — the ones I find myself needing to fix every August.
| Your PFDPull it off the hook and actually look at it. If the foam feels compressed when you squeeze it, the fabric is sun-faded, the straps are frayed, or — the biggest one — you're not wearing it on the water because it's uncomfortable, replace it before fall. Water gets cold fast in six weeks and a bad PFD is the difference between an inconvenience and an emergency. |
| Your anchor systemIf you're still tossing a coated brick on 30 feet of tangled rope, this is the year to upgrade. A real anchor system holds you on structure without the fight, deploys and retrieves one-handed, and never tangles. You'll be fishing deeper water in fall — you need real hold. |
| Your transport setupLook at your cart. Are the tires worn flat? Frame bent? Straps stretched out? If you're wrecking your back at the launch, you're leaving fishing energy on the driveway. A better cart pays for itself the first trip you don't feel like you got in a fight before you started. |
| Your backup paddleEvery pedal or motor guy needs one. Drives fail. Batteries die. If the wind picks up and your primary propulsion is out of commission, a compact 4-piece paddle stashed in a hatch is the difference between paddling to the ramp and calling for rescue. Non-negotiable if you fish alone. |
| Your electronicsFall bass go deep, and they stack tight on structure you can't see. If you're still fishing blind, you'll spend most of October guessing. Even a basic fish finder tells you depth, temp, and bottom — three things that matter 10x more in fall than they do in July. |
