Different kind of issue this week. One story about a decision I made two months ago that I'm reversing today, and the retreat details at the end. Read it in that order.

Dad Joke of the Week

Where do fish keep their money?

In the riverbank.

Let’s get into it.

THE RETREAT · Issue #31

Santee Cooper in November is different

By Jay Valentin · Thursday, September 4, 2026

Quick story before the details.

Back in June the plan was to bump the retreat price on July 1. That's the standard playbook. Early-bird ends, price goes up, guys who slept on it kick themselves.

I sat on it. Then I got back from the KFD Seneca meetup and changed my mind.

Fifteen guys drove in for that meetup. Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania. One morning of fishing and everyone agreed the best part was putting faces to names. Guys who've been in the Kayak Fishing Dads group for years finally shook hands. That was one morning on a lake we weren't even supposed to be at.

The retreat is three nights of that on Santee Cooper.

And the reason most guys don't pull the trigger isn't the price. It's the timing. Summer bleeds into fall, work piles up, kids go back to school, and by the time you look up it's October and you missed the window.

So I'm not raising the price. $500 is $500 until the cabins are full.

Santee Cooper in November is the reason. It's 170,000 acres and the bass are staging shallow the whole time we're there. Water's cooler, boat traffic's gone, and you've got three days to fish a system most guys only see on YouTube.

Three nights lodging, three dinners, group fishing, fireside Q&As with kayak creators, swag bag, gear raffles. Shared cabin, individual bed. First-come. Cancellation is $100 through Halloween.

If you've been thinking about it, this is the sign.

Fall Bass Gear Guide

5 things worth grabbing before September flips to October

Water's cooling, days are shorter, bass are chasing bait. These are the five I actually reach for right now.

Strike King Red Eye Shad

Strike King Red Eye Shad

$7.53

Cover water fast. When the shad ball up in the shallows, this is the lure that finds fall bass in the fewest casts.

Rapala X-Rap Jerkbait (Size 08)

Rapala X-Rap Jerkbait (Size 08)

$9.97

Twitch, twitch, pause. When cold fronts kill the topwater bite, this is the reaction bait that saves the day.

Booyah Blade Spinnerbait (1/2 oz)

Booyah Blade Spinnerbait (1/2 oz)

$7.99

Slow-rolled through mid-column brush. Chartreuse/white in fall is a cheat code.

Merino.tech Merino Wool Base Layer Top

Merino.tech Merino Wool Base Layer Top

$44.99

The layer that lets you fish 45° mornings without a bulky jacket in the way of your cast. Wear it. Forget it's on.

Nite Ize Radiant Rechargeable Headlamp

Nite Ize Radiant Rechargeable Headlamp

$29.99

Fall means shorter days. Both hands free at the launch, both hands free at the takeout. USB-C.

While it's still on Kickstarter

The Ventral inflatable fishing platform is still $1,500 off retail.

Early-bird $2,499 (retail $3,999). Fits under a bungee, 600 lb capacity, GPS anchor lock, electric motor built in. If a stable second boat for glass-calm fall mornings is on your radar, this is that boat.
