😂 Dad Joke of the Issue What did the American flag say to the other flag? Nothing. It just waved. |
Let’s get into it.

Your July 4 Weekend Game Plan
July 4 is on Saturday. Every boat ramp from Maine to Florida is about to look like a parking lot at the mall on Black Friday. The fish are still going to bite — you just have to be a little smarter about how you get on the water. After enough holiday weekends stuck behind a line of trailers, I’ve got this down to a system.
First thing — get there early. I mean dark-early. If you’re not on the water by 6am, you’re going to be circling the lot waiting for somebody’s trailer to back out. Better yet, skip the main ramp entirely. Find the gravel pull-off, the little secondary access, the spot nobody else thinks about. That’s the whole point of fishing from a kayak. You can launch where the bass boats can’t.
And give some real thought to where you go. July 4 is the worst day of the year for rec boat traffic. Every lake with no horsepower limit turns into a circus — rec boats, jet skis, personal watercraft, half of them driven by folks who haven’t been out since last summer. A kayak sits low and quiet, and they will not see you. Skip the big open-water lakes for the holiday weekend and stick to your no-wake creeks, rivers, and ponds. The fishing is better back there anyway, and you’ll actually be able to hear yourself think.
Before you go, run the five-minute check. Drain plug in. PFD on — actually on, not bungeed to the back of the seat. Phone in a dry bag or leashed to you. Water, more than you think you need. And tell someone where you’re putting in and when you’ll be back. None of it is exciting, but it’s the difference between a good story and a bad one.
That’s the whole game plan. Get out early, fish somewhere quiet, and come home with your gear and your dignity intact. Have a good Fourth out there.
🎯 GEAR GUIDE |
3 Picks From Eco’s 4th of July Sale
Quick gear hit before the weekend. Three picks from Eco’s 4th of July Sale that are worth a look — sun protection, safety, and one big-ticket if you’ve been thinking about upgrading.
EFS New Era Long Sleeve Performance Shirt — $39.95 Sun shirt for the long days. UPF performance fabric, lightweight, breathes when it’s hot. Different brand than the WindRider stuff in past issues if you’ve already stocked up there. |
NRS Clearwater Mesh Back PFD — $95.95 (was $127.95, 25% off) Holiday weekend is the worst day of the year for rec boat traffic. Wear the vest. The Clearwater is mesh-back for hot days, has the proper pockets for fishing, and 25% off makes it the safety upgrade that’s actually worth grabbing this week. |
Jackson Big Rig FD Fishing Kayak — $2,379 (was $2,799, 15% off) The dream pick. Jackson’s big-body fin-drive flagship, $420 off as part of Eco’s 4th of July Sale. Jackson rarely goes on sale — if a serious pedal kayak has been on your mind, this is the kind of price point that doesn’t come around often. |

🎯 WHAT’S WORKING |
Holiday Weekend Fishing, Anywhere You Are
Quick tactical hit for the long weekend. The bite is on across most of the country — just have to adjust for the heat and the holiday traffic.
- Dawn and dusk are everything. Topwater first hour after sunrise, last hour before dark. Midday the surface bite shuts off and the rec boat circus opens up. Plan around that.
- Deep or current. Bass push deeper or to moving water in July. On lakes, work rock structure and dropoffs in 12+ feet. On rivers, fish shaded banks, current breaks, and bridge pilings.
- Slow your roll. Finesse plastics — Ned rigs, drop-shots, weightless worms — outwork fast-moving baits when the water hits 75°+.
- Get visible. July 4 weekend means jet ski city. A bright tow flag and a nav light if you’re launching pre-dawn are worth more than any new lure right now.

Member Catch of the Issue

This is the post of the issue. Jose Lopez got on the water with his twin boys — one riding tandem in his XTR 130, the other in his own kayak — and the bite was on. Both kids on fish, both kids grinning. Jose dropped the line in the group that's exactly why this whole community exists: "I can't wait to make even more memories with them this summer." That right there. That's the whole thing.
