What’s up guys!
Welcome to the very first official edition of The Hookset Weekly!
This newsletter’s been in the works for far too long. I wanted a simple way to connect with the community. A place to share tips, gear ideas, and the kind of stuff that gets lost on the feeds. Every two weeks, you’ll get kayak and fishing content with no noise or algorithms.
Dad joke of the day: Why don't fish ever get good grades?
Let's dive in!
Peace and God bless,
Jay

🎣 Late Fall’s Your Best Shot at a Big One
Early November is prime time for targeting bass as they make their final push before winter. Here's what's happening right now and how to capitalize on it.
What's Going On:
Water temps are dropping into the upper 50s to low 60s - bass metabolism is slowing but they're still feeding aggressively
Bass are moving from summer haunts to winter staging areas along main lake structure and creek channels
Baitfish are schooling up tight in deeper water, and the bass are following these easy meals
Fish are feeding heavily before the lean winter months - this is your window for big fish
My Go-To November Setup:
Jigs: 3/8 to 1/2 oz with craw trailers off the banks, drop-offs and laydowns.
Why it works: Bass are relating to bottom structure as baitfish move deeper.
Swimbaits: 4 inch paddle tails on 1/8 oz jig heads through any remaining grass, under docks or around structure.
Why it works: Perfectly mimics the schooling baitfish bass are feeding on.
Crankbaits: Medium diving cranks are a great way to cover water. Work shallow and deeper.
Why it works: Covers water quickly to locate active fish moving between areas.
🏕️ Community Retreat Recap: Otsico Lake
October 16-19 at Otsico Lake, NY - We wrapped up our first-ever Kayak Fishing Dads retreat last month, and it was everything we hoped it’d be. 11 guys came together to fish the easternmost Finger Lake. Most didn’t know each other going in, but everyone left with new connections. The bite was hit or miss. Some crushed it, others struggled, but most landed fish.
This was our first time running a retreat like this. The goal was simple: slow down, share meals, fish new water, and hang with other good dudes.
We're planning to do two or more of these next year somewhere around the east coast. If that's something you're interested in, reply back to this email and let us know.

🐟 Brag Board - Weekly Catch
Sean McCue was fishing out of his Old Town PDL 106 on Crystal Lake in Ellington, Connecticut, when he connected with this beautiful bass! He was throwing a Green Gizzard Strike King 6XD - a great choice for November when bass are relating to deeper structure and baitfish. Nice work, Sean!

🛠️ Gear Spotlight: Cold Weather Essentials
November fishing means cold mornings, wind, and changing conditions. Here’s what I use to stay warm and keep fishing when temps drop.
Wool fingerless gloves -$14.95
Warm, affordable, and perfect for cold mornings. You keep dexterity for tying knots and handling gear, and the wool stays warm even when wet.
NRS Boundary boots - $139.95
Pricey, but worth every penny. Dry, warm, and great grip for wet launches. The best cold-weather boots I’ve found for kayak fishing.
Insulated waterproof fishing bibs - $149.98
Keeps you dry from splash and spray, and warm without bulk. Way better coverage than a jacket, especially when sitting in a yak all day.
HotHands Hand Warmers - $27.99
Toss a few in your pockets or gloves and you’re good. These heat packs last for hours and make a big difference on cold mornings.
Portable Phone Charger with Multiple Cables - $20.99
Cold kills batteries fast. This one has cables for all devices and keeps your phone charged for safety, maps, and fish pics.
Budget Tip: You don't need the most expensive gear to stay warm. Focus on layering and keeping extremities (hands, feet, head) protected first. Start with the basics and upgrade as you figure out what works best for your fishing style.
