Dad Joke of the Week

I tried wiring my kayak without reading the instructions.

It was a shocking experience.

Let’s get into it.

FIELD NOTES · Issue #37

Everything I used to wire power on my kayak

By Jay Valentin · Thursday, October 15, 2026

I just put out a video wiring a full Yak-Power system into my kayak. If you are thinking about adding electronics, or you are tired of a rat's nest of wires running to your battery, here is everything I used in one spot. Parts first, then the tools.

The parts

Yak Power 8-Circuit Bluetooth Switching System

Yak Power 8-Circuit Bluetooth Switching System

$199.99 · code BDF5 for 5% off

The brain of the whole setup. Eight circuits, Bluetooth, and a wireless remote so you can switch your sonar, lights and motor from the seat. Yak-Power has become one of my favorite upgrades, and I have put it on multiple kayaks over the years.

Redodo 12V 50Ah LiFePO4 Battery

Redodo 12V 50Ah LiFePO4 Battery

$169.99 · code BDF8 for 10% off

The battery feeding everything. 12V lithium, so it is a lot lighter than a lead acid battery and holds its voltage all day.

Suspenz YellowFin Rigging Station

Suspenz YellowFin Rigging Station

$249.95

Holds the kayak at working height while you drill and wire, instead of crawling around on the garage floor. Newer to me, but it has changed the way I rig kayaks.

BRAG BOARD · CATCH OF THE WEEK

Addicted Angler

Addicted Angler holding a big smallmouth bass from his kayak

Look at the color on that smallie. He dropped a tip with it too: the smallmouth are up in the shallows right now, and his go-to baits are a wake bait on a slow retrieve or a swim jig with some flash. His pick is a flash swim jig, because the flash and water displacement pull fish in from a long way off.
